How to time a radio script

Most presenters and voiceover artists read at around 150 words a minute. That makes a 15 second ad about 35 to 40 words, a 30 second ad about 75 and a 60 second ad about 150. The generator aims for that word count and shows you roughly how long your script takes to read aloud.

Treat the result as a first draft. Read it out loud, swap in the phrases you'd actually say and trim anything that trips you up. A script that sounds like you will always beat one that reads well on paper.

FAQs

How do I write a radio script?

Write for the ear, not the eye. Keep sentences short, use the words you'd use in conversation and say the most important thing early, because listeners can't scroll back. Mark music and sound effects as cues on their own lines so whoever is on the desk knows what happens when. The generator above gives you a first draft in that format to edit and make your own.

How many words is a 30 second radio ad?

Most voiceovers read at around 150 words a minute, so a 30 second ad is roughly 75 words, a 15 second ad is around 35 to 40, and a 60 second ad is about 150. Leave a little room for music and pauses rather than cramming in extra copy.

What should a radio ad script include?

A hook in the first few seconds, one clear offer and one call to action. Name the business at least twice so it sticks, and only include details listeners can remember without writing them down. If there's a web address or phone number, keep it short and say it at the end.

What is a station ID?

A station ID is a short line, usually 10 to 30 seconds, that tells listeners which station they're tuned to. Stations play them between songs and at the top of the hour, often over a jingle or music bed, so the station's name and sound stick with new listeners.

Is the radio script generator free?

Yes, it is completely free. Once your scripts are ready, you can schedule your shows, pre-records and presenters in RadioCult.
